Fridge experts

Post by Tysoe »

Evening all,

Just got my first camper at the weekend and the chap i got it off said the fridge didn't work off the gas as a pipe had corroded and never got replaced. This is what i found when i pulled the fridge out...

Image

I've done a bit of research and found the square thing is the pilot shield and have found where it needs to be relocated so that;s not a prob but can anyone identify the pipe? Exhaust pipe? Seem like it's been cut off from somewhere at one end?

Image

I assume this is where 1 end of said missing pipe will connect as gas comes out when it's turned on. I'm also assuming the other end goes down the back of the fridge to the bottom and connects here:

Is this where the exhaust would fit?

What's the metal dip stick type thing inside do?

Thanks for any info. Is this something it's safe for an untrained person (me!) to be findling with or is it best to take it to a expert? I've disconnected the electrics to the fridge for the time being to be on the safe side.

Cheers,
Jason

Right, first things first. I'm not an "expert" but I do have a camera :D

I'd say that cut off piece is the exhaust flue pipe that attaches to the exhaust vent on the side of the van. Mine is done with a flexible pipe but my previous camper had a solid one. Here's a couple of pictures

Above picture also shows the actual fridge gas exhaust (with flexible pipe removed). Just to the left is the gas pipe you appear to be missing and can be seen attached to the gas valve in this picture below. Ignore the plastic pipe; thats the sink waste pipe.

I don't have a picture of the bottom connection but I'd put money on it being where your picture showed. The 'dipstick' in the exhaust is a sort of spirally piece that helps control the heat dissipation from the exhaust gas (so I've heard) and the fridge won't work without it.

Here's links to a couple of fridge manuals. First one shows gas connection, second one shows you the solid flue pipe fitting
