Europe Breakdown cover

Post by mattrsa »

Have booked to travel europe for 5 weeks in uk/august and was wondering who people go with for europe breakdown cover? So far had two quotes (AA, RAC)and both were £250. Is this about right?

Hi

We use ALPS breakdown cover - only available through Glynwood Insurance brokers. A lot cheaper than the AA - think we paid £80 last year and in fact may have been a bit less.

Make sure you have a written agreed valuation from your insurance company if going with ALPS breakdown cover because your van, camper will only have a low value in the glass guide and if the cost of getting it fixed or back to the uk is more than the guide price you will have to pay the rest or leave it there. I spoke to them on the phone after reading the small print on the the european breakdown cover paperwork (no mention of it on the uk breakdown cover paperwork). Not a problem if you have a proper written agreed valuation.

On the slightly older van, ours is a 1990 we found one of the only companies to offer breakdown cover in Europe was Brittany Ferries. They cost about £80.00. Good to see lots of other places offer it aswell after reading this.

Thanks for the advice, I think we are going to go with alps. Actually am just in the process of doing my insurance so better get an agreed evaluation.

Thanks for the advice

Check the age of your van is covered; mines a 91 and RAC wont cover it other than as part of the camper and caravanning club membership.

Also check your covered for where your going as the RAC for instance have zone 1 for west europe and zone 2 if you are traveling further afield.

and check you covered for a five week consecutive trip!
