I put a splash of 2 stroke oil in with a tank of diesel.

I suppose you could compare this to someone taking a whole load of different vitamin tablets every day....if they were eating a ballanced diet they shouldn't need suplements! just like your van shouldn't need additional additives in it's fuel or oil. As long as you are using a good quality Diesel oil and fuel.
FYI, oil has lots of additives already in it, ie: the manufacturers formulate their products with anti foam agents, film strength additives, anti corrosion inhibitors, viscosity index improvers and much more...therefore, why would anyone be wanting to add something that wasn't necessary.
The best advice I can give you is buy diesel specific oil and change it often and as far as fuel goes, use what works/feels best for your engine as all fuels are not the same.
