Advice on Autosleeper project

Post by timski »

Hi guys,

This is related to a previous thread - https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=85551

So in preparation for this welding project, I need to remove anything inside the camper that is flamable or might get damaged during the welding.... or at least as much as I can.

I've managed to remove most of what I want to remove already but I need to remove the internal lining still and this is proving difficult. Any advice is very welcome.

1. The lining goes behind the cupboards, but I can't see how to remove the cupboards? Any ideas? I've looked inside to see if there are any bolts holding them in place but I can't see anything obvious. Have any of you had a go at removing them?

2. The lining also goes behind the rubber seals of the side windows. So I need to remove the windows. The rubber seals are in good shape at the moment with no signs of rust. Do you think it would be possible to remove the windows and seals and reuse them afterwards? Or should I bite the bullet and buy new seals straight away.

Regarding seals and windows, if I have understood the following thread correctly (https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... 1&start=60
), Autosleepers have Autosleeper specific window sizes. While I'm removing these windows I want to replace the sliding window above the cooker/sink as it is damaged. Do I have to source that from Autosleeper directly or do other suppliers produce windows that fit in Autosleepers?

Here is the window I want to replace.

Thanks,
Tim.

the window would have to be second hand.
the furniture is fitted from the outside in.
so the extremities would have to be removed first.
removing the fridge should give a better idea of fixings

I have this problem too... but decided that it would create more issues than it would solve
So I elected to have the panels glued on with automotive panel glue rather than welded.
The company I chose have been doing this for 18 years.

Thanks Kev.

Ah right. In that case a few more questions :-)

Would the same be true of a simple window without any sliding elements? Or would that have to be second hand too? If I go the second-hand route, where would I get hold of a second hand one? Maybe from a show? A breaker? Or do you know a supplier?

Sorry I'm being slow as always :-) Which panels did you have glued? Are you referring to the lining inside?

Yes any window back from the cab is sleeper specific, apart from the rear screen.

The panels I mentioned are the van panels on the outside
not interior panels

Ah I see. So I won't be able to use the glue route for the strut.

Thanks for the clarification.

Hi Guys,

Regarding getting the windows in and out, I read on a previous thread
https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... 1&start=60
that you should use some silicon sealant. What kind of silicon are they referring to? Is it the rubbery kind that prevents leaks around baths, or more of a lubricant to help get the window in?

Also, I read about the "string method" for getting them back in. Is that only intended for the windscreen, or does that also go for the side windows?

Cheers,
Tim.

for the side widows only a lubricant and the bead tool is required
I didnt need to use string, without the bead the window falls out and in.

I've got the diamond lacing tool on order already. What did you use a lubricant Kev?

Thanks,
Tim.

Hi, Any queries with an Autosleeper conversion. The man to call is Colin Osborne at Autosleeper,01386 853338. He sent me wiring diagram and test sheets on my '86 VHT(trident). You will be surprised at the spares they still hold for older campers.

Thats very usefull Paul thank you very much

some folks haven't had much luck with Autosleeper, I have had good experiences with them for my VHT as they are only too happy to help.
May be if Tim gets in touch with Colin he'll be able to describe the construction to him.

On the subject of removing the cupboards, you will have to unattached the wardrobe and bed.
The whole side unit will come out in one, but you have to find all the screws to do this.

We had an interior that we had in and out of the van a few times, although I bought the interior seperate so cant tell you the orginal screws location.
