Throttle Cable Sticking?

Post by foggygolf »

Hi All

I just picked my van up after some work for the MOT and after driving home i went to start the van up and the accelerator pedal jammed on (the actual pedal came back up but the cable stuck on). I went to the engine and pulled the cable and it came unstuck? Any ideas how what i can do?? Do i need a new cable? If so how much and from where? It's just funny how this has happened straight after having the clutch pipe changed - is it possible the cable has been damaged or moved during the pipe replacement?

Any thoughts or advice massively appreciated.

Cheers

Rich

yes could have been moved to get better access to clutch pipe but more than likely brought on something you would need to have sorted out sooner or later any way. check the run of the cable to see if any obvious kinks and return spring is doing its job and end of throttle cable seated correctly if petrol. brickwerks do some replacements

Just a quick update, i found the problem. The cable sheath had split near the front wheel arch where it goes through its guide bracket (if thats what you call it) see pic below!

I then looked under the matt near the accelerator pedal and found this directly above the bracket where the split cable was.

The van had recently been in the garage for both side steps to be welded, so not sure what has gone on but this is how it came back, i spoke to the garage (he is a decent bloke) and he said to bring it down and he would replace the accelerator cable. Just wonder what actually happened it looks like the plate was welded and possible heated the bracket which melted the cable sheath!

Anyway hopefully problem solved!

cant remember the proximity of cab step and guide bracket welding hot and kindo shrinks an warps stuff give him the benefit, its not a huge job, just a bit of a fag to get the guide over the petrol tank (is there another guide above there?) it bolts on at the back anyway Like I said with a 20+ year old van it was probably marginal and needed doing any way, they all do unless done recently IMHO. Looks like the only section without any waxoyl there too!
