1986 1.6 TD 5sp Gbox 3H, Big problems Help

Hi, I have just joined your site to help a friend who rang me this afternoon with a problem with his 1986 1.6 turbo diesel with a 5 speed box type 3H. He is stranded in southern france when he first experienced disengauging from 5 th gear. He thought he would be able to complete his journey with the last 4 gears left but today it will not engauge 4 th gear. He is a level headed engineer and has ventured underneath with no axles stands and checked linkages.

He has visited a local garage who indicated that it needs a new gearbox, he speaks good french and I can't believe he would have the wool pulled over his eyes in France. The garage could not locate another gearbox to suit and stated that noone locally could rebuilt this model.

He phone call to me was a last resort, as he has no tinternet access where he is.

He asked me to locate a gearbox in the UK and arrange to send it out him.

Has anybody got any suggestions where I could get a gearbox to suit this van. used or refurb ?

I just had another conversation with him, turns out the gearbox is definately US, he has spoken to a rufurbing place here in England and they have no gearboxs on the shelf, they could refurb his one.

So if any body knows where there is a 5 speed 3H gerbox tht can be sent out to help a stranded member in France.

Spanner boy or letshaveabus on here should be able to help with a replacement box. Pretty sure any late 5 speed box will fit although ratios may then be slightly different.

Aidan is a t25 gearbox specialist.

To get him out the sticky stuff, he could fit any water cooled box even a petrol one would work if the bell housing and input shaft changed.
