Hi All
I have a hole in the heat exchanger near exhaust flange on my 81 air cooled westy LHD.
How much hassle is it to change a heat exchanger ? What is the procedure.
I read in haynes manual that I need to remove fan.
Cheers Jay

Assuming it's the same setup as a RHD then it's pretty straight forward. No need to remove the fan, just get it on some ramps or jacks and you can get at everything from underneath.
Dissconnect the pipe to the heater pods, disconnect the pipe that comes down from the fan housing. Then it's just a matter of seperating it from the silencer and cylinder head. This is where it gets tricky. There's a good chance that all the bolts will be rusted together. The ones to the silencer aren't too imprtant because they can be drilled out and replaced with an M8 nut and bolt. The problem is getting the cylinder head bolts out without snapping a stud because this opens up a whole can of worms. You will then have to get it drilled out and re tapped and put a new stud in. Use plenty of easy out and get some heat on them if needs be.
You will also need a new set of silencer and manifold gaskets.
It's all pretty self explanitory once you get underneath and have a look. Just be very very careful with the head studs. If in doubt let a garage do it.

Re: Heat exchanger swap
Hello,
Soak the head studs in plus gas or wd 40 for 24 hrs.
Invest in a very good quality 13 mm ring spanner,(preferably thin walled and 'C' shaped).
Protect your eyes, work safely.
Cordialement,
