Cattle warning for rough campers (Settle)

Post by gilbo »

Okay so we get up to the hills on the east end of Settle and find a spot 'off road' enough to be out of everyone's way, and park up.

Image

Area up there is great, very open, no traffic after 10pm usually, and fantastic place to wake up. We went for a nap at about 8pm and closed the curtains.

I was woken up by a startled Hazel at 10pm, telling me that someone was knocking on the side of the van. It's going dark out and I peep through the curtains, blurry eyed to see what at first appeared to be a big brown settee or something being carried past the van. I panic - rub my eyes and look out the other side. It's only a small herd of hairy horny cows surrounding the van! God, I was really panicking now, given that ALL of them were hitting the van with their HUGE horns as they came in for a closer look. These guys were the American-esque cows and looked truly evil and dangerous, even though I know they are probably quite placid, so going outside or beeping the horn were both off the agenda. We waited about 10 minutes in silence, peeping through the curtains and they eventually walked off together and a quick check of the van showed no damage. Thank GOD.

This morning, we rose at about 9am, and saw these beasts were all over the hills around us now - I counted about 15 of varying colours, as soon as three nearby ones all stopped chewing and stared at us, I knew it was time to go. I didn't want any damage to my van! Here are the buggers, no doubt telepathically communicating with each other, debating whether or not to come and stick a few holes in my vans body.

Despite the early escape, we broke a driveshaft on the way home in Ilkley, and had to be Green Flagged back to Leeds :(

At least the spot we picked wasn't a dogging spot.

They're Highland cattle from north of the border aren't they? Could be Aberdeen Angus (or is it Agnes cos they're girls?)

They would make a terrific cow pie. Desperate Dan/Euan where are you?

Hi gilbo lad, you should have cut up one of those little cows & stuck it under the grill! Unless your van happens to be a Westy of course!

Class !!!!

Much to David Eccles dismay, Torz and I spent a good 10 mins reading his camper van history book...a good read it was too !!!

(think i'll order it thru the local libary)

apparantly havin a grill didnt meet Germanic regs, so its safe to boil a kettle at 100kmh, but not grill a Aberdeen Agnes
