LED interior lighting

Post by Louey »

I was looking at Hakuna's van last weekend and I saw his strips of blue LEDs - not that I want blue lights inside but would the white LED versions be any good for interior lights

examples:
Ebay example 1
ebay example 2

Would they be too harsh or not bright enough??

Should I go for something like this
Ebay example 3
Ebay example 4
:D

Louey, what may suit one owner may well not suit another. LED lighting is a good move due to its low power consumption but some like/dislike the light given off and theres quite a difference between one type and another. They're cheap to buy on ebay so experiment away. I use a combination of stick-on battery powered types and static ones. Ideally you want 12v-ready otherwise you have to mess with power droppers etc. Deck lighting is generally very good and the strips you mention are used by quite a few on here. I also converted all my indcator, side and brake lights to LED around four years ago so if I did break down, the running lights won't dim after a couple of hours.

I picked up some unwanted LED lights from my local electrical installation engineers (they do pub/shop refits etc.) I have wired half the LED lights to the 12v and the other half to their 240v transformer, all the fittings match now and I have a dual system. While I was doing this I also fitted single led downlighters around the van as mood lighting, great for when you are just sitting and chatting or watching TV

OK I got a bit giddy in IKEA bargain corner the other day and bought some 12v lighting. I have just got it out and realised I don't know what to do now  I have opened up the transformer, and can see how to disconnect it. Do I then just attach the 2 wires to where the old tube lighting is fitted in the van. Sorry, I know I'm a muppet, it was just such a bargain and I had read this thread earlier
Where the wires go into the transformer 1 is labelled 12v and one gnd, is that the earth? I'm assuming the black wire in the van corresponds to that, and the red one is the 12v.
I also got one for in the cupboard that comes on when you open it for £4, should have been £10. Luckily that one is battery powered :D

Brilliant Kev, thanks, you are a star :ok
I am so excited, I'm going to be stalking bargain corner now for more. Not only use less energy, also so much less fragile than those tube bulbs that we seem to break all the time!
