Westy fresh water pump refurb

hello all

thought i would have a go at this today. the pump is noisy and does not really pump much water at all.

anyone got any advice having done it before?

firstly - how to remove from the van? I presume i need to find the electric source, disconnect and pull the cable through the grommet?

Next I cant really see how it comes apart and dont want to break the whole thing at the first stage. Does the inlet end just pull off?

also - if it is knackered can i substitute it with another submersible pump easily? i have seen that Whale pumps are good but would like to know people's experiences

all suggestions gratefully received. in the meantime i have to mow the lawn..... :?

Maybe a good cleaning would help it? When I replaced my pump with new, the old one was not working. I just tossed it in the trash and hooked up the new one. I wish I would have saved it to at least try an expirement with it. I have read that you can bring them back to life with some simple cleaning and a few turns by hand of the small rotor on the bottom of the pump. It may or may not work for everyone but it's worth a try, right? I'm not sure what YOU would use to clean it but I was thinking that a solution of CLR and water may do the trick. Then again I do not know if that stuff is ok to use on electric pumps but it seems to dissolve all impurities that would be in the water.

Bottom of web page says that it's ok for RV water tanks should that also mean safe for pump?

Sorry forgot to answer the question. Yes just unhook the pumps power supply in the hidden compartment next to the water tank. Then just pull the wires through the grommet.

I have tried turning the rotor arm on the bottom of the pump but I think the motor is knackered - it is grating when it turns. Do you know what the spec would be for a replacement pump and what current the existing one draws? - The existing one is rated at seven litres so if i go for a higher rated one will that draw too much current?

Don't know what specs are other than 12v. Any 12v should work, right! If in terms of amps drawing down the battery, I don't think it's a concern unless you have it flowing all the time.

replaced with a whale 12l/min today - easy job and the tap is now useful :ok
