engine knock

hi all i have a 1985 transporter 20L lhd
when starting i have a slight banging noise when turning the engine over (would this be the engine mounts)

without hearing it we can only go on your description.
It could well be worn out mounts

tell me can you hold the engine either side, and shake it with your hands more than a couple of inches?

yes kev when i try to rock it i can hear a tapping noise on one side

Can you get someone to shake the engine and you listen for the noise ..just to try and locate it roughly?

Should it turn out to be mounts.. they are available and easy to fit..
