Re: Syncro sticky starter syndrome
you could probably get the solonoid seperately but i fitted a complete unit to mine in the end. got fed up pulling it on and off after it got flooded last year. people moan about doing the starters on the petrols but there not to bad to do.......ONCE........ after the 3rd time you start wishing you had a diesel.

Worse on a doka due to the high load bed too.

Re: Syncro sticky starter syndrome
Can a dodgey solenoid make the starter over run?

Re: Syncro sticky starter syndrome
Had the same issue on my old
1.9 petrol.
One of the previous owners had changed the solenoid but the problem persisted when I took ownership. Got some good info from BY about cleaning all the earthing points starting with the starter motor- thoroughly clean the starter where it mounts to g/box, (the ring and bolt mounts) get all the crud and paint off.
Next clean the g/box where the starter inserts. I used emery paper and a sharp scraper for both.
Next do the g/box body earth strap. Not sure where this mounts on the 2.1 but the td goes from g/box to the mounting hanger and I recently sheared the bolt here (oh joy !
) so you may want to go careful with it.
Next one is the battery body earth strap. Also do the obvious and make sure the battery is kicking out enough
Did all the above separately and the "click" lessened each time. Although Im not 100% sure if it was totally cured, you'll have to ask Twiggy. Shortly after doing the last bit he wrestled me to the floor and beat me with sticks until I sold it him
Good luck with it

Re: Syncro sticky starter syndrome
Starter's not full of crap yet!!! Bench tested and is definately solenoid related. Could anyone point me in the direction of a good solenoid/starter supplier?

Re: Syncro sticky starter syndrome
if you send me your solenoid I'll take it to my local guy for refurbishment, but if you ask around the garages where you are you should find your local guy, insist on correct new long stud cap, he won't have one on the shelf but he will be able to get it

Re: Syncro sticky starter syndrome
I found that a bench test of a starter won't always spin them up unless you've got bolted terminal clamps direct to a good battery. There's too much resistance/voltage drop when trying a "flash" test with jump leads, even h/d decent ones.
I went for the "bolt up the refurbed one and hope it's ok" technique - and it was!
FWIW, brightening up the starter contact faces is a bit of a waste of time, since it should be sealed with RTV (an insulator) on a syncro to keep the crud out; the earth return relies on the mounting bolts for continuity.

Re: Syncro sticky starter syndrome
Recon starter fitted and sealed to keep the crud out !- Result, no sticky solenoid
Scared the dog "pooh" though, he was asleep in the van when I tested it not expecting it to fire up and it immediately burst into life !!! No big deal You'd think but ther'es NO exhaust fitted as am still waiting for a nice shiny one from Mr Baxter { hope it's worth waiting for} !?? Also fitted rear difflock activator boot and now d/lock works !!
Looking forward to getting back on the road/mud but it's a bit noisy at mo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Syncro sticky starter syndrome
Mr Baxter's exhaust arrived and fitted
Excellent system, WELL worth waiting for but think the cream on the cake would be a pair of s/s silencer straps, now have to purchase m/s ones and treat with heatproof paint
