Air Filter Hose

Hi,

Should there be a hose for intake air into the air filter. I currently just have a hole in the casing of the air filter but no hose. If i should have a incoming hose where does it take clean air from. Its currently just sucking in air from the engine bay. (i do have a hose going from the air filter into the carboretor.

Yes there should be a hose.
It would be attached to a ram air system or snorkle type affair
it helps to give the engine a bit more power at higher speeds
Asuming this is a wbx engine with a square filter box

I currently dont have anything attached to the input hole on the air filter box. I have also found that the engine is losing power (just not firing) at high speeds recently. I checked the air filter and its pretty dirty (although only been in for a year and i havent done that many miles). I suppose taking air in from the engine bay is quite dirty air. I am getting a new filter.

You say you have a spare hose (or is that your signature?) Does it look like this (attached)?

Where does it lead to? Does it take clean air from under the vehicle?

I see they are £60 on just kmapers. would be happy to collect from you sometime but not sure when i will be up that way (im inlondon).

ps - the hose from the filter to the carboretor is perished and cracking. do you know anywhwere to find a new one?

That's the hose from the carb cover to the crankcase breather tower (see image linked below pipe number 12)

I dont have anything present in my van that I have circled in your diagram. My van seems to run ok but I must be losing performance and economy? The previous owner installed a twin choke Weber carb conversion - would this be sufficient to run on? How tricky would it be to install / have installed a ram air or snorkle type affair?

I may be 15 trees away from barking up the right one but I thought that piping was linked to the exhaust to aid starting in cold climates

I have never had any of that on my van and it's always ran fine. The usual 17mpg on lpg

I've never had it and dont seem to be missing it either - no problems starting in the cold too. I'll not bother doing anything with that then. So do you just have a hole in your filter box for air to be sucked in?

Whats the story with Webber? I seem to have stumbled across something!

Actually the extra piping may be some kind of extra filter system for running in dusty countries as well as pre-warming. Don't quote me though.

More knowledgeable people will tell you about webber carbs

This is what should attach to the airbox (square)





it doesn't point up like that it goes into the air intake recess under the vent
It takes advantage of the extra air pressure in there at higher speeds and creates a forced air effect through the intake system

I take it you chucked that bunch of rammel out of your's Kev My vapouriser unit's in there (later intake system)

That's right Ian, it had to be removed for the LPG vaporiser.
Now I've lost the full ram air effect on petrol.... shame really.

I used to catch the hulleys bus from Old Brampton to Chesterfield! Not lived up there for a while but still see it now and again.

so you get a bit of a turbo at higher speeds then? very nice. any idea where i might pick one up?

Whats the white lever on the top for? Is it to switch to exhaust fumes in the winter? Is there much wiring / cabling to install this? Sorry im quite a novice but enjoying it all the same.

Like I said I have a spare one.. in fact that's a picture of it all.
No wires.. the vacuum pipe (not a lever) can be ignored and removed, as this is for extreme cold weather of the type we do not get in this country

you'll be sucking fresh clean air into the airbox when it's fitted
