Power Steering Arm - different for syncros?

Post by Jeremy »

I've just "upgraded" my LHD T3 syncro from standard steering to power steering, but when fitting it I've come across a problem. I bought the kit from ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWNX:IT).

However the power steering 'steering arm' (the bit from the box to the rack) doesn't fit - it's too long at around 70cm, and needs to be around 63cm. Is this a difference between syncro and 2wd (assuming the kit came from a 2wd van)? My option at the moment is to shorten the arm, but ideally would like one that would fit - if anyone has one?

Yes - I believe there is a syncro specific version of this part.
Probably a bit like hens teeth to find one

That's what I'd feared... still if Ayrton Senna's welded his steering arm, no reason not too....

According to vagcat, the syncro has an A code at the end of the part number; 251422753A as opposed to just numers on the 2wd van part
(if I'm looking at the right it :D ) Cant get any specifics on size of it though, sorry, but I'm sure someone will have a more helpful answer
What a long strange trip it's been

Chillia - thanks for the link.

Power steering now fitted and working - and it's the best thing ever! (Thanks to T25direct for his help - and Lewis for doing the hard graft and fitting it for me). It's transformed the van - and makes parking so much easier. Only disadvantage is that I won't be looking like Charles Atlas after driving for a while.

Next problem to sort out is the speedo/lack of apparent 4wd ..... (the list is long....)
