Which oil?
Hi everyone,
Im planning to service my bus and just wanted some advice on which oil is best. Its a 1987 watercooled with a standard 1.9 petrol engine with 107,000 miles on the clock. Just wondering what type of oil is best for this engine?
All advice greatly appreciated!!!

Re: Which oil?
4.5 litres of 15/40 MINERAL oil .... NOT Semi-sympathetic
Ian
First time out get a 500ml plastic pop bottle and fill it from the 5 ltr tub you'll have to buy, that way a) you have 4.5 litres to put in the engine and b) you'll have 0.5 ltrs to easily top up between services. The filler neck is telescopic as well btw

Re: Which oil?
i ran my mv on at semi synthetic 10-40 wit
would love to know you reasons for not using semi synthetic oil? i always ran my mv on semi synthetic 10/40 with no oil related problems, come to think of it every thing that i have owed in the past 10 years i have put either semi synthetic or fully synthetic oil in with no oil related issues.
these include
1969 triumph tr6c 650cc air cooled twin (motor cycle) which i still have, 10/40 s/s
1947 bsa b31 350 single 10/40 s/s
1978 yamaha xt 500 single 10/40 f/s
1967 karman ghia 1641cc air cooled 10/40 s/s
1957 beetle with origional 30hp engine 10/40 s/s
1990 transported 2.1 dj 10/40 s/s
1991 transporter syncro 2.1 and 2.3 run on 10/40 and will always been
just to say that mineral oil is what they were designed to run on when they were produced so that is what i am going to put in it dose not add up, all older (air cooled) vw's were designed to run on single weight oils 20weight, 30weight ect depending on the seasional temp and so on. but you would have to be mad to use one of these oils, and i would imagen you would be hard pressed to find a t1 or t2 owner that dose not use a multi grade oil,
as i asked before why not semi synthetic?
on a seperate note i have put fully synthetic gear box oil in my gear box and front diff the difference is very notisable with the gear changes both from stone cold and when hot. slick and smooth through all temp ranges, as the old mineral in the box,

Re: Which oil?
As Cov Kid has pointed to the link that will answer most of this question.
However, I will add that just because 10W/40 SS has worked in all these different engines (they haven't blown up) doesn't necessarily make it the best choice otherwise ask yourself the question: why are there literally dozens of oil types on sale..there must be a good reason.
And
There are several on that list most certainly would have been better off with a different grade and type.

Because the recommended oil for the T25 in our climate is 15/40 mineral oil, everyone I know and respect uses 15/40 mineral oil.
I know of quite a few people on here over the years who have either put s/s in themselves or had it put in by mistake in garages and promptly had it leaking from seals or had oil pressure issues.

3,000 > 4,000 miles depending when I hear it needs it. 4 or 5 times a year
