1600 CT spares

Post by o.moore »

Dear All, we are newbie’s to the Vdub clubs/forum, and novice owners of a 1981 T25 1600 CT Devon camper. We’ve had the van for around a year of occasional use, but not taken it on a big trip yet. Our plan is to spend this summer driving around France Spain and Italy, on a six month trip.

The van currently runs well, but were looking for some advice about what key spare parts we should get to carry with us?

We’re aware this is an unusual model, so we are keen to carry as many of the unique replacement parts with us, in case we encounter difficulty sourcing spares on our journey.

Also, if anyone knows of any good suppliers/mechanics in these countries that would be really useful too

Many thanks for any advice!

Ello.. the CT engine isn't that rare it's just seen as unpopular - the vans' conversion maybe, you don't state what it is..

There is only the normal things to take with you some of which should be:-

* Breakdown recovery/assistance of some sort! remember these vans are not a new vehicle...
* dizzy cap (new)
* rotor arm (new)
* Possibly a coil bot not essential
* spare dizzy if you can get one
* OIL 5L of the CORRECT oil!
* Spare spark plug or 4 (new) + plug spanner and feeler gauge AND some emery cloth+wire brush for cleaning up dirty plugs
* A haynes manual or at least a list of correct tyre pressures/plug gaps/timing settings/oil type
* Cable ties
* Tow rope
* Gaffa and electrical tape
* Spanners/screwdrivers/sockets/hammer
* rags for wiping hands etc
* A good usable jack, I take a bottle jack with me as the one with the van is not good enough to lift up the van and allow you to get under without the risk of it suddenly giving way
* Electrical scotch blocks/chocolate blocks/spade connectors and some spare cable
* FUSES - the correct type for you van
* A can of tyre weld in addition to your spare wheel - oh check the spare wheel before you go too
* FIRE EXTINGUISHER!
* Spare bulbs/warning triangle/reflective vest - this is law in some countries
* A printout of the members lists addresses incase you get stuck - have a read of this link https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=80558 for a member on here whom got stuck in France and has been helped out no end by another member (shameless plug/big up to John!)

You could on on for ever but the above should be included or at least considered

Get some pics of your travels up so we can all see how you get on

thanks very much doug - this is a very useful list, i will ensure all points are covered!

i'd only got the impression it was a 'rare' van following advice from a garage i took it too, who told me it would be difficult/take time to get some parts for that model, (i think i remember he mentioned) clutch and accelerator cables and so that was the reason for the post, just in case anyone knew of anything that might be real tricky to get, and maybe id get the part to take with us on the trip as a precaution... but maybe im just being overcautious
