Oil Burning - Quickly...

Post by liam_w »

Hi, I have a 1.6TD 1990... it seem's to be increasingly burning more oil, recently had the head gasket done and it's since then it's been going through it.

Filled it up with oil to the second dot on the dipstick, took it down to falmouth and back (1000 miles), averaged around 60-65mph so not the easiest driving but still nothing major, checked the oil and it's disappeared, took another litre or so to get the level back up. Economy is still fine and there's not loads of smoke on start up, quite a bit when you rev it hard but dies down again when it's warm. Sounds sweet and idles normally/revs freely

Anybody have any ideas, or are they just oil burners when they are running right?

If you didn't check the oil in a 1000 miles then yes it could use that amount of oil. You don't say what mileage the vans done as that will have a big effect on oil consumption. Check the water in the header tank to check whether it's oily as that would indicate a problem with the head. Check your oil daily then you will get a better idea on consumption, especially if you're driving at 60-65mph as the lower the oil the quicker it will use it, as it will be getting to hot....
