Reverse lights intermittent

Hi I am having problems with reverse lights not working on a 1.9 1983 DG petrol engine. I have diagnosed the problem to the reverse switch on the gear box. So I purchased a second hand switch from ebay.

The new switch doses work but unfortunately too well the reverse lights now go on in reverse which is good however they flicker on when selecting other gears and intermittently stay on in 4th gear.

I have a 4 speed gear box which is quite sloppy. Should I go down the route of replacing bushes on the gear linkages and try to tighten it up or is there something else fundamentally wrong

It is going for an MOT soon so I will disconnect the switch as I’m pretty sure no reverse light is better than flashing reverse lights when changing gears.

you dont need reversing lights for MOT.

you can adjust the switch with felt washers , i have done it before.
dont think the linkages affect the switch, but you may have play in the box itself????????

talk to the gearbox guuru...... you'll find him lurking in the northwest somewhere, ask toomanytoys!
