blue 87 panel 1.9td engine advice

Post by Lamby »

Hi guys,

Yesterday whilst driving home I lost compression and finally came to a stop, the AA towed me to my local VAG garage where after inspection they gave me the bad news, I have lost cylinder 3, the mechanic has suggested a new/recon/second hand engine.
Not being that mechanical there is a few questions I would appreciate your answers to.

I have a az 1.9td engine with a 2.1 litre petrol (the original) gearbox

1/ after diagnosis is a new engine my only option?
2/ the van has never been quick, the garage will only swap the engine for a supplied by me like for like, so can I drop a bigger cc engine in without any further alterations?
3/ does anyone know anyone local to me in Hampshire who will pick my van up and sort it one way or another for a good price?
4/ has anyone got an az engine with low miles that is known to be a good engine?

or finally is there any other options anyone can suggest?

I have a budget in mind

Hi they come up on here in the for sale section from time to time, Some come in a vehicle and some without. You can look on Ebay for Passats and golfs with knackered gearboxes and MOT fails for something cheap. I am fairly sure the 2.1 gearbox is not geared correctly for the AAZ which means the engine will be revving higher than it like to be to get the vehicle to a decent speed . That may have contributed the engines demise.

Have a look in the alternative engine forum for extra info too.

As a side point i think the 2.1 box is suitable for a AAZ - i would love one in fact.

Thanks to spannerboy/Simon I am now driving again, the engine he supplied me was spot on, never knew an aaz conversion would drive so well, I think I have been driving a duffer for the last 2 years.

oh and the gearbox/engine combo is spot on also, :ok
