I need a new (round) headlamp for the MoT, as the glass is cracked, water has got in etc.
Reading another thread I'm wondering if there are different types - what's an H4?
When I replaced the other side a while back, I also had to replace the bulb because it no longer fitted. Apparently it was a 'halogen bulb that fits non-halogen reflectors'. So that'll be what's on the broken side.
Just wondering if there's some kind of upgrade I should be doing at this time. Also, is Simon's relay kit relevant here?
Any suggestions? Van is April 1986. And the RH headlight didn't work for the first attempt at the MoT until the horn was sounded! (Fine now.)

hello...
interesting questions...will need someone more knowledgeable than I to answer fully. Have been told that H4 are brighter. How do you know if you have H4? Have a look at the lens, in the middle where all the patterns meet will be H4 stamped into the glass. I have changed to H4 from the old ones...but by luck rather than judgement! (old ones were rusty, but set on e-bay, turned out to be H4!)
Have to admit, haven't seen a huge change, but most of the night driving I do is in street light areas anyway!
More information for the wiki, mr moderator!
Thanks
edited to add.....does the H in H4 stand for Halogen, then??

H4 should be on the lens as mentioned..
these are much better, the lens pattern is better than the "non" H4 units..
With a relay kit, the lamps will give full power, I thought mine were ok until I checked the voltage.. I was getting about 11 volts when after the relays ere fitted I get 13+.. might not sound like much, but it makes a hell of a difference, expcially when tey have been on a while.. the old switch gets hot and the resistance goes up an then the voltage drops further..
If you dont drive at night then it aint a prob!!
The Halogen "upgrade bulbs are still available.. just need to go to the right place.. If I can still get bulbs for my 1967 french tractor (and not a common one)..
Any of the breakers on here will have some, but they are not too bad from EUrocarparts/GSF etc new.
