Help - no 1st or 2nd gear - Ashton/Droylsden area

Post by CovKid »

A friends camper can get reverse, third and fourth but no first and second - ideas? linkage out of alignment or failure?

Need someone up that way who can go take a look for me before I think about sourcing another box.

im no expert but if it were mine id try and manually put it into first at the gearbox and if that worked id assume it was the rest of the set up :ok

Yeah I'd do that too. Hes not overly mechanical and just outside Manchester so trying to guide him or find someone up that way who would be willing to take a look for him. Bit far for me.

He'll check tomorrow. Anyone had a box go on just 1st & 2nd? Sound to me like the gate (H) but as I say he can get reverse as well as 3rd and 4th - just not the ones in between. Wish I lived closer as I'd nip round and have a look. Could well be an easy fix. He's had probs with 2nd for a while.

Could be the nylock nut at the bottom of the Gearstick? This happened to me, lost first and reverse.

if it's a 4 speed and he's lost 1st and 2nd then probably the relay lever inside the box that reverses the throw, but he'll have to remove the cup from the ball and check at the box to eliminate linkage issue

i have been having the same problem on my 2ltr Aircooled, no first or second or very hard to get anyway, just fixed the problem turned out to be the plate under the gearstick gaitor needed adjusting, now feels like a new box :D

Difficult for me as I'm not close enough to him. He's an 80/90 member but offline at mo. Is there anyone up that way (Ashton/Droylsden) willing to drop by and have a check to see if box has indeed lost these two gears or if its just front adjustment. If its box I'll volunteer to drive all the way up and fit another as soon as I can find him one but don't want to go through that gritty job if its something a bit simpler.

He says: "basically, in 1 and 2 it just idles, no hint of catching at all" but lets face it it could just be front adjustment - needs someone who could check for me. :D

Bump - is there no one in that neck of the woods that could take a peek for me?

Three cheers for Hacksawbob who drove all the way from Bolton to Manchester and for pinpointing its the linkage not the gearbox. Hes still under there now. :D

Got first anyway!

After mucho discussions with Aidan (and myself), they may just have sorted it. Now nearly 9 and Hacksawbob still there bless him. Damn it the T25 gear linkage is a right pain in the proverbial.

No feedback on where they were by the finish though. Lot of work for Bob for sure.
