Mystery bolt

Post by ermie571 »

Good morning all.

2.1 petrol 5 speed box.

right, drove to the garage fine Monday night to collect the other van.

John drove her home. Half way home, lots of clunking on changing gear. Well, more like pulling away. Going into gear ok. So sommat not right. Now, Got to work this morning, and in my parking spot (park same place every day) is a rusty bolt......but its weird....it looks about 8/10 mm body, but the head is cone shaped, and smooth, with a hole in the top. But unless very worn, not the shape of a star drive or allen key drive, Bolt isn't hollow. How the hell you would do it up, I have no idea.

But ....has this bolt fallen out somewhere...and is the lack of it the cause of my knocking?

Anybody recognise the description of the bolt (will put a piccie up tonite)?

Thanks in advance

Em
xx

I remember what it is / looks like!! IT LOOKS LIKE THE SHEER BOLT USED INTERNALLY IN THE STEERING COLUMN....WHY THE MOSES WOULD ONE BE ON THE FLOOR?

What did you have done at the garage?
Have you checked the cv joint bolts?

Tinman.....thanks for the comments

Funnily enough, CV bolts are first on the list when we get in tonight....really hoping its just that!
That van wasn't at the garage.....she was my lift to the garage to bring the other one home....

Re: Mystery bolt / Clutch

Post by ermie571 »

Ok...little update.

Been out to have a ganders tonite...all cv bolts nice and tight. Van will roll with no noise. Van will engage all gears with engine off and engine running. So hopefully not the gear box.

The clunk comes when you go through the biting point. Garage reckons the springs on the clutch plat may have failed....or poss the clutch release bearing. He said to drive it down (mile or so) and he will drive it to get a better feel of what is wrong.

What do folks reckon? Safe to drive down....or drop the box and have a look roadside?

We have done the clutch roadside before.

Thanks Aiden,

yeah - think that's what the bolt is....do they use them on the outside as welll as the inside? Apparently my steering rack was loose and needed fixing properly for the MOT...
Don't think its anything to do with the clunk and shiver on taking up load.

Em your problem is probably down to one of those rubbery things that sit on the end of metally things

clunk on taking up load could be delaminated gearbox mount/engine mount
bolt could be from last time steering column was worked on esp if it was rusty, been under the floor mat got disturbed fell out of accelerator pedal hole ?

Mr Andronicus....your advice is invaluable, and I am humble in your presence. I await the day that the MOT realise the importance of such a guiding statement....and it appears regularly on my failure sheets!!!

Aidan,

thanking you for some advice that actually made sense to me!! (First time for everything) both on the bolt and the clunk. Got a spare gear box mount at home (if you mean the one on the nose?), will purchase engine mounts and keep in garage if not required - Mark is coming up on Sunday to have a look with us.

When I saw your name my heart sank.....thought you were just about to deliver the death knoll for my gearbox!!!! Delaminated mounts I can live with...got a laminator in the office...will run it through that. A3 or A4 pockets to you reckon!!?

Thanks to all who took the time to comment!!

Right,

this afternoon Mark has popped over....we have disconnected the cv joint from the gear box....bits of mangled metal! One race broken....so its new cv joint time.
