ticking sound...

Post by chukaspaz »

Hi,

recently my van has started sounding like what is best described as a sewing machine...its almost humourous its that bad...sounds like ze germans are coming when it comes up the hill...any advice other than kicking it while swearing? As the throttle is put in, it clicks...

cheers!
James.

So it doesn't make the tickey tack sound when idling or low power, just when you load up the engine - Y/N?

Qu 2) If you change down does the sound increase frequency or stay the same (road speed or engine speed dependent) - ?

when its idle it clicks slightly, i mean it sounds unhealthy at idle, then yeah when i pick up speed it is more rapid sounding, when i change down a gear it will increase as the revs go up...basically the more throttle the faster the clicking gets...

cheers!

So you've got an engine tick, probably the tappets. Sometimes this sounds louder going up some hills as you say, going slower and more time to listen to it ?

Has it had an oil change recently?

Can help them noisy tappets. Mine does this sporadically, the neighbours just love me first thing in the morning

As already said, change the oil, use castrol GTX 15w50 or a 20w50 take it for a 20 min drive and see if thats cured it, a tappet change is a pain as the pushrod tube has to come out and apparently the collapible ones are no longer available!!

Short runs are the thing that makes tappets rattle..

Went though all that ,thought the engine had had it,changed oil and filter as advised on this brilliant forum,a few miles later and she has been purring like a kitten since.
Hope you have the same .
