Just a quick one - I will hopefully soon ish be fitting the gas pipes for the fridge etc, and was wondering what if anything you need to seal the threaded joints to ensure no gas escapes?
Thanks

Re: Gas fitting/sealing
I am judging your state of knowledge about gas fitting from your query about which sealant. Forgive me if I am wrong, but it seems you don't have a lot of experience of gas fitting. I BEG you to get a qualified gas fitter to do it. There are not amny things I get specialists to do for me, but this is one of them.

Re: Gas fitting/sealing
I see your concern! And yes, you are correct.
I am quite happy doing it, but have a family friend who is a gas installer so I am going to get him to check it along the way and when finished make certain that there are no leaks so I can ensure that its 100% safe
Plus like yourself, I hate paying other people for doing stuff on my van which I could probably do myself, and get checked

Re: Gas fitting/sealing
I believe the stuff you want is called Pipe Dope or Pipe Thread sealer. It's made for gas applications and is easy enough for the DIY'er. Maybe a squirt bottle with some soapy water in it to check for leaks once the gas has been turned back on.
On my westy I disconnected the main propane tank and installed the fittings from a gas grill to my stove and fridge separately so that I may use the small #1 tank of cloeman propane. My fridge will run on propane for three days before I need to change out the tank.

I have cleaned up this install so that the lines are separated and the each line has it's own regulator and direct fitting. In the bottom pic shows a "Save A Steak" fitting used for when the #20 tank on a gas grill runs out. I purcahased the #1 tank fittings from an RV store and they are a direct fit to any of these regulators sold at Walmart etc....(at least here in the US)
No need for additional hardware for the rubber hose either, they are 3/8" flare fitting and just screw up to the Westys' fridge and stove inlets.
Hope this helps?

Re: Gas fitting/sealing
The threads on a compression fitting have no part in the keeping of gas in - this is achieved by the olive. No sealant needed on the threads. If you need a sealant you have incorrectly assembled the joint - remake the joint.
