1st gear whine

1st gear whine

Hi,

Just picked up from van from MOT yesterday, as the van would be up on the ramps I asked for the gearbox oil to be changed at the same time.

The van is a 2.1 with a 5 speed box and has had no issues apart from the gearchange getting progressively stiffer - hence the oil change. driving back was night and day, really glad I got the oil changed but there is now a whine from 1st that wasn't there before.

As soon as I lift the clutch the whine is there increasing slightly with speed but disappears as soon as I change up.

I did a search and found reference to the Thrust Washer, could this be the cause?

when they changed the oil what was the build up on the drain plug like ?

The first gear is at the front of the box and sits between a bearing in the end case with a thrust washer, and the 1st reverse synchro inner hub - when the pinion bearing is worn the pinion shaft moves forward in the case under load and squashes the first gear between these two damaging the face of the gear and the inner hub of the synchro, eventually the needle bearing get's damaged and fails and then it all gets very expensive

Looks like its time to get the gearbox looked at. I need to go back to the garage tomorrow and will ask about the drain plug. Considering the mileage and lack of maintenance the box has had in the last 6 years I shouldn't be suprised.
