Gearshift Linkage Refitting

I have recently replaced my gearbox(dg), in my 1987,1.9l, petrol, t25 and i am unsure how to correctly realign the linkage. I am not overly keen on the method in the haynes manual.Could you let me know how you refitted the linkage? Would you recommend putting gearbox into reverse and then putting gear stick into reverse and connecting the shafts(pinch bolt)?
