fianlly started the strip down!

Post by MattyG »

At last ive finally got around to starting on the stripdown and refit - a 30th birthday treat for her

Saturday saw 6" of snow but that wasnt gonna stop me!
Found it a lot easier than I thought it was gonna be to get everything out, i was mazed that there were no big shocks or problems with rust (that ive seen so far...).
the only real problem was the back of the main unit which flaked to bits , i think mainly down to a small leak ive found in the slat window on that side. so that unit will need total re-build
The floor wasnt in bad condition but I plan to give it all a lick of vatcan and rustoleum to make it look nice n' spangly before everything gets spruced up and put back in!

I plan on re carpetting all sides etc, new flooring, new upholstery throughout. new electrics and gas. oh and sort the body work out which is currently Duck taped together :rofl

few pics below, more to follow as soon as I get a chance to get out and start on her properly

the word 'board' would imply that it's nothing to do with you, but something to do with the site/host possibly?

You need to use a host to store your pictures like http://www.photobucket.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
try them it's free.

once you have registered with them
use their upload button
choose the pictures on your computer from photobuckets window
once chosen, highlight it (single click), then click to open it. (this starts the upload)
let the file upload...
once uploaded copy the [img] code for forum and bulletin boards that photo bucket supply under the picture (hover the mouse over the pic).
paste it in this forums reply box.

bobs your uncle

consider putting some thermowrap/insulation under the floor before you refit it

managed to get out over the weekend and strip the rest of the rear out.....congratulations to DEVON conversions for having the most stickiest glue ever. took me nearly an hour to clear the bottom of the passenger seat box section!

vactan 'd any rust - even the smallest of dots. intention is to rustoleum it to give it a good few years of extra life even if its gonna be hidden again. found a few setions of rust on the floor under the opening windows, must be a small leak coming through the window. also had rust behind the panel that covers the sliding door section.

managed to finally get out and get some jobs done last week!

i had prepped the van floor so ordered the rustoleum to go on the cab floor (turned out the tin of 2.5ltr paint cost me £250 insteda of £30 cos they got my details mixed up with someon elses).
paint in hand I started on the floor

1st coat shown (just lightly keyed it the next day and gave it another quick coat)
Image

then put some insulation down

Image

Image

and a spangly new chunk of Marine ply for the floor

Image

put insulation in ever crevice and panel I could

plus every where else in the back!

then attacked the new ply lining in the back, 4mm ply - loads stronger then the original hardboard "pooh"

i even insulated the back of the panels to give extra warmth

bit of insualtion on the rear engine angle section - you can just make out a nice shine of the rustoleume on the back of the bay (only 2 coats so far)

had my first crack at welding since I was 16 - got my old welder back and a few bits of sheet steel.
fashioned a new step which I was suitably impressed with given it was the first time Ive ever done it.
Just need to take the door off to finish as I couldnt get into all of the sections very well as you can see on the lower left of the step.
just needs a final weld and grind down

Image

cant do any more on that until next wee though :(

so onto the bed - took me hours to strip the plastic brown coating that was on it off

Image

Image

couple coats of red oxide which ive flatted back

Image

have started to paint with rustoleum now so will update with results soon, hope to get another coat on it this weekend

We use the same tool, I can't do any work without a tin of Carling. Looking good.
