bolt looking item that bolts to the gearbox with a 19mm nut . goes forth into the shift rod about 3 inches.
has a nylon ring on the end!
doubt you will get a new one.
make sure the old one is straight or straighten it , get a bush/washer made for the end and it will be good as new!

The gearbox etc saga... Well, the crankcase ol seal was perfect, I ordered up a spare anyway, but of course ran out of time before it arrived so didn't fit it, it is just a spare at the moment. The inside of the bellhouse was dry as a bone, with just the debris from the clutch in there. I have an oil leak from the pushrods, had one from the rocker covers but sorted that now.
I will take pics of the area when I get a chance before I go away though.
More details on the actual problem I am having though... 4th and third are there, and easy to find where they should be. To get 2nd, you have to push the stick down as though you are going for reverse and go down, but it selects easily. First is a bit of a pain, you have to again push down as though going for reverse, throw the stock over and then come back about 2" (aiming for the volume knob on the CD player that's in there as my reference) and feel for the click. Manouvering in the snow I have found it is too fond of jumping out of first. Reverse is a law unto its self, sometimes it's there where it whoudl be, others you have to really throw the stick hard over and quickly jam it upwards to catch it, and the moment I lose grip in the snow and the wheels spin, it pops out of gear.
It looks like the knuckle slider thingy has been splayed out, I had assumed that this was the cause of the problem. The previous owner had told me that it was fine before it went into the rip off garage he used, and was bad when it came out. I suspect that the garage carelessly dropped the engine when they stung him for a new (unnecesary) cylinder head.
I shall take the whole lot to bits because it all looks a bit battered, and see if it can be put back together again properly though I don't know what goes where and have nothing as a reference.

Be nice to know the outcome, mine pops of out of first sometimes too, mines a watercooled - but I'm guessing they're the same layout

Re: you know the sliding knuckle coupling thing on the gearbox..
I don't quite follow what you think the problem might be, but the fact that you can select 3rd and 4th without a problem suggests to me that the centre shift rod might be out of alignment with the rear shift rod. This will cause the gearshift lever to interfere with the stop plate at the front when trying to select reverse, 1st and 2nd. Easy mistake to make if the garage loosened the clamp at some stage without marking the position beforehand. If that is the case then simply loosen the clamp between the two and turn the shift rod closest to you slightly anti-clockwise in relation to the other, tighten and try gear selection. Make more adjustments if required. If things get worse then go the opposite direction. Hope this helps.

Re: you know the sliding knuckle coupling thing on the gearbox..
Ah, ok I will try that too. It's just that the coupling on the gearbox is splayed quite far out, so I thought it was maybe running to the end of the movement of the knuckle too early because of the splaying out, if you follow?
But I will try tinkering with it, cheers!
