Engine revving high after carb rebuild

Post by chrisscotland »

Chaps & Chapettes,

I've just rebuilt my Pierburg 2E3 with a kit from Gower and Lee and cannot seem to get the engine to idle at anything other than, what sounds like, max rpm.

I took apart as much as I could to thoroughly clean it, so there could be a chance that i've not put something back together correctly, but my lack of mechanical knowledge means I don't know where to start looking  Does this sound like an issue with the spring in the choke assembly? It popped out when opening the assembly up, so I never got a chance to see what it was originally like.

I have checked to make sure the throttle cable isn't jammed anywhere, and it's OK.

I tried to adjust the fast idle screw but couldn't find it at the time, so the settings are as they were before the carb was removed. Before the rebuild it idled at what sounded like normal RPM (but died under any sort of load - hence the rebuild). Excuse my ignorance, but if it's not been touched, I wouldn't have thought some new gaskets etc would change it that drastically?

If anyone could point me in the right direction, it'd be greatly appreciated. The camper is a few miles away, so I only get to work on it ever other weekend, but hopefully I'll manage to make some progress with it over the christmas period (if the snow stays off!).

Also, as you can probably tell, I'm a complete amateur! Just trying to learn, so please go easy on me :)

Thanks,

Chris

Yes mate you haven't put the return spring on correctly.

The butterfly valve in the carb throat (NOT the choke flap at the top) should be closed when the throttle is off

Incidentally the engine will run at 2000 rpm when cold as the fast idle cam makes it do so

Brilliant! Thanks for your quick response :)

I'm back with the camper on Friday, so I'll take the carb back off and see if I can work some magic.

Oops, hadn't realised it'd been this long since I posted this!

I've since taken a look at the carb and it appears the valve was closed when the throttle is off, so I don't think it's that. However, I've now introduced a new problem by being completely ham "interfered with" and have snapped the float off :( Alas, a couple of attempts with super glue has failed (not surprisingly!).

Unless anyone has any suggestions on how to fix both, I think it could be time for a new carb. Apart from ebay, does anyone know where I can get a new 2E3? I'm not wanting to go down the weber conversion route. Even with a snapped float, would it be reconditionable?
