Roofboxes for westfalia space above the cab
Hi, Ive tried to search but couldnt find anything regarding the storage space above the cab on Westfailia etc.
Does anyone know of the perfect fitting size roof box to fit in this space?
Would like to have the option to fit a water tight box of 10-20 cms high and then also 20-30cms high depending on storage need. Which completely fits in this space, and then using the fastening hooks to tie it down.
Also taking into account the slipstream too etc. Ive saw saw metal boxes in the local DIY store, but thought someone may know a mail order side. Such as http://www.alutec.net/index.php?home_en-1

Re: Roofboxes for westfalia space above the cab
Westfalia supplied a rectangular shaped bag, made of heavy duty PVC. It had a zip running round 3 sides for easy loading. Colour light grey, with 3 leather straps, also grey, which run over the bag and attach to the hooks. I bought it as an option when I purchased the van.
When I used to travel with a family I found it very useful to carry a 6-berth frame tent and assorted stuff for long stays - left the inside of the van a bit less congested on overnight stops. I could fill the bag from inside the van through the canvas window.
I doubt you'd find an original today (mine's not for sale) but you could maybe get a waterproof bag (Ortlieb? favoured by bikers - my other boxer is a twin). You could certainly claim that a grey bag is more 'authentic' than a solid box. As far as aerodynamics is concerned, a soft bag may be better than a box, depending on the depth.

The go westy box is just pure genius in my opinion, but not seeing anything in Europe of this type.
Not measuring anything yet, but the tray looks about 10 cm deep, so to not make a massive aerodynamic change, I would say 20 cms in height is the maximum you can go.

Re: Roofboxes for westfalia space above the cab
Hi, so I eventually took some measurements, they are as follows:
Length Front = 112 cms = 44.1"
Length Middle = 114 cms = 44.9"
Length Rear = 116 cms = 45.7
Width End = 48 cms = 18.9"
Width Middle = 50 cms = 19.7"
Height End = 7.5 cms = 3"
Height Middle = 9 cms = 3.5
and after hunting around some, Ive figured out the following too:
[*]forget typical roof boxes, cant find anything even close
[*]Quad Bike storage seems to look the closest thing, check out these
Box

(Dimensions: Front- 32"L x 12"W x 6"H)
also:

and facing the otherway round there is even an aerodynamic curve

Bag

(trying to find out the dimensions of this one)
I think some poking out of the top by the storage device is inevitable. The smaller the better

Don't know if you're still interested but I found these Peli boxes.
The gowesty one is basically a gun box, which peli manufacture similar. The link shows the box that I thought was just right , offering a little more depth than a gun box. It would be fairly straight forward to get a folded steel bar with lock as per gowesty storage made up. At £200 plus I'm opting for some canvas & steel rope with padlock.

ahh great, that looks pretty good, thanks.
The one you posted there is IMO at 355mm a little too high. Especially for me, as I park underground, at its a close shave as it is.
what about having this on top of the bus!

Yeah! I'd did think having a box like this and traveling through parts of eastern europe, I may look like a romani looking to take revenge.......

I'd be interested if anyone else has come up with any other products more recently that would work in this space? Seems a waste to not have anything there.

Hello a very good copy of the westfalia roof bag has just been reproduced by cool-out ltd. it is a shade darker grey than the original it was copied from. All measurments are exact to the original. The only thing is the straps are not the same as the genuine product because when the genuine bag was sent to be copied he forgot to send the straps with it
I have both a genuine one and the copy. Ebay number 151016018403 tell them you want a club 80 90 discount aswell.
