Acoustic oil level indicator

Is it just me, or are there others out there who can hear when the oil needs a top up?

The van currently takes about 0.5 liters between changes and as soon as the 0.25 mark is reached I can tell by the engine note ...it just sounds that bit rougher/ more agressive
