Pick up locker doors mod

Post by Fin »

I'm fed up with banging my head on my locker doors when I'm out and about.
I use the locker quite a bit for keeping my riding kit in when I'm at events and stuff.
Thought i'd be cool to have them open the other way round so they open downwards.
So when the hinges finally fell off mine I bought some second hand doors off C&C with out rust with a view to modding them.
They arrived with extra dents thanks to Mr Courier sigh!
One side of my bus was so bad I just had to swap it out immediately - obviously spraying it matt black before I did so.
Took me ages to get the bloody screws out but finally with a bit of action from the Firey spanner they were free
Thought I'd bang some pics up of my mods
Started by removing the lock and roughing up the hole (ooo err)
Image

Then made a cardboard template of the hole and copied that onto the locker door I'd removed
Image

Metal work in place
Image

Add some of Finlays really shonky welding and cleaned up with the grinder
Image

Whacked on some filler and also a smear where the door had seen some previous action
Image

That's as far as I've got today - Plans are to remount the hinges, put twin locker clasps on the top edges and add a leather belt instead of the metal strut - so I can adjust the amount the door opens for when I lower the bus...

You have my attention, thinking of this myself as the doors are good but the hinges are poor.

Did some boring stuff today
rubbed down the filler and added
1 layer of filler primer
rubbed down then
1 layer of grey primer
The bits that look like dents aren't its coz the paint was still wet
Image
Looks ace - I'm trying actually to be content with it not being perfect as if I went to town on it, the door would look immaculate and I'd have to do the rest of my van - ha ha
now I've covered up the bare metal, start on hinges next maybe an up date on Wed....

Cleaned up the hinges off the old doors today ready for welding in to the donor doors.
Image
Also did a test fit of the door catches/locks I'm hoping to use - back into the old rusty door - just to see if it fits and how much modding I'll need to do for clearance.

As you can see from the piccys, the old ones were really rotten - seems to be a bit of foam that I guess was put there as a seal is the culprit of all the rust - if you have non rusty doors, get rid of the foamy thing now - save you some work in the long run.

Got them off FleaBay
They've got a shop got loads of cool kit.
I've bought a big catch off them before and an awesome external light for the back of my cab

here's the link to the catches
They even did me two with the same lock - so I only need to carry one key

Ok didn't get much done tonight, my 10 year old son phoned me from the house (I was in the workshop) and told me to stop playing with my toys and that I was being too noisy, the tables have been turned

Anyway - was playing with this - bought it for fine cutting in the doors, most of the dremel cutters I've used before have been dog sh** but these are ace.
Put them in my air powered drill/grinder
Image
Managed to grind off the old hinges really cleanly
Image
Then cleaned up the area around the hinge - removed the foamy bit - ready for welding tomorrow hopefully

Pete PC52's done this to at least one of his. I've cut all the brackets and bits off mine for easier access (tent is a tight fit!) so they need propping open but better than those annoying spring arms

I was thinking of finding a nice gas strut to replace the springy thing on the side that still opens right way up

Cut the final holes for the locks, and laid them into place today.

looking good, seems a good idea as well.

PS does this mean you have an original spare locker latch hanging about? one of mine is seized solid, I've had it soaked in oil for days but no joy so gonna have to cut it off, I've got the lock barrel out OK so just need the latch.
