Hello, I've joined the broken Heater Blower club...seen Druids post & responses and looked at Wiki, it looks a bit daunting...
My heater blower was working ok, I drove it this weekend and the blower won't work on any speed now, the fuse is fine & when I looked behind the switch the wires looked connected...heater works, plenty of hot air when I'm driving, but no fan....
Anyone confirm my fears? - is the motor dead? Will I have to attempt to remove the dash & follow the Wiki instructions???
Have you noticed a squeaking or slowing of the fan recently? If so then it could be the blower motor or bearings giving you problems.
If not, and the fuse is ok with no problems up to now, then I would suspect the earth connection behind the fuse box to the left on the earth crown. Give them a good clean and try again!
Check and re-check the fuse too!

Thanks Mark - I'll start by swapping the fuse then check the earth connection (not heard of an earth crown, is it where the earth connects?)
The Fan was working fine one day, nothing the next....little speakers on my dashboard have started to buzz when I play cassettes, could this be earth related??
Buzzing of cassettes sounds like interference coming from the cassette motor itself, could be earth related or if pitch changes with engine rpm then it's probably ignition lead related from the coil to the plugs.
And yep, the earth crown is where a lot of individual earth meet in one place. It's called a crown simply because it looks like one. It's round and has male spade connections on it which accept the earths spade connections. I's fixed to the bodywork behind the lower left side of the fusebox. If you look under and up you will see it!

I looked at the earth crown today & removed spades to clean and reconnect - damaged one spade in the process, I'll have to buy some more...Blower still not working..
Looks like rain is getting in & trickling under footmats, maybe thats interfered with electrics, what a pain - don't relish the prospect of fixing the leak (the Wiki post for this - removing the windscreen etc looks like a big job)....wish I had a garage!!! I'll have another look this weekend.
While you're down by the fuse box, check the spade connections going into and away from the fans fuse. If you have a multimeter, check you have power behind the switch too.

I'm not sure, possibly becasue I could turn it right round at one point...
A garage near me can get an electrician to identify the fault, he said its bad if you leave the blower on when you've finished a journey - it gets a shock when you turn it back on!!
If a certain part is bust, I could have a go at sorting it to save an expensive labour bill...

Well don't take it there then = what a load of tosh !!!
As said above, 1st thing is check the switch and the power to it with a meter and work from what you find there.
It would be unusual, though not impossible, for the the motor itself to suddenly pack up.
Hi-
im in the ever growing broken heater club too. i get power in to the 3 position switch, about 13v while running so ok there. the switch itself doesnt seem to work though, when measuring resistance through the live pole to the three 'exit' poles, i get no change and is always closed.
so i figured i could jump the switch with some wire to check if i can get the fan to start, by hotwiring from the live to to the other 3 options in the switch plug. still no luck. is the switch doing something else im missing???? or is my switch AND blower kaput... like i think...
ghost123uk wrote:(could someone help by confirming if the motor does have an earth return wire, or is it earthed through the case like a starter motor ?)
if my memory serves me correctly, the blower motor is mounted on the plastic casing of the heater matrix so would require a return earth
thanks guys- ive an early fusebox, so have the combined wiper/blower fuse.
that fuse is fine, ie wipers work, and no fuses blown. does the blower have another inline fuse somewhere im missing? ive checked the only one i can see, and its ok. the wiring is, um, interesting. i thought it was just my van, but even the photos from haynes look crazy. all other electrics function correctly. so identifying the blower cables is hard!
cant face taking the dash out or paying someone to do that, dont mind living without it if its an actual motor problem. but would be cool if its just the wiring!
As far as I know there are no other fuses. Since you have an early van and the wipers still work it's unlikely that the motor is seized - that don't mean it ain't bust though. If you look in Section 12 of the Haynes manual it will probably include details of the blower wiring. The diagram should reveal the colours of the wires and where they go to (once you've gone through the learning to read the diagram thing) and you can at least check connections.
