I reckon anyone with a winch fitted is more likely to get stuck..

If...I was in the market for a winch (big if) and had a syncro with PAS, I would give serious consideration to the likes of a Milemarker hydraulic winch.
Lighter and more powerful than an electric, will work all day at full load until you run out of fuel, no wiring to fuse/melt/short out/flood. To be found on the back of recovery trucks across the land...

But not too good if your engine has drowned out

Use an electric hydraulic pump? no electrics on the winch to drown, and power even if you have killed the engine?

There's a downside to either system, but...if your engine's drowned then there won't be any charging available for your very rapidly draining battery whatever.
Then you're up the shizer and no mistake.

I have one, but with a Superwinch plasma rope to be fitted. I havnt used it in anger yet so cant comment constructively on any winch on a van I have actually been in control of and dont have anything to compare it to that I have actually used to tow a Syncro out with. Pete has one that seems to work well and he has towed me a few times in various conditions with the desired results.

Fluid power is the way forward...when did you ever see an all-electric HIAB?

Question is.. Do you really need a winch?

First I'd make sure i had one of these:

Some of these:

and one of these:

Only then would i consider getting a winch, and even then, You're probably better off with one of these:

You can attach one of those to wherever you want on the van, rather than just the front.
