electrical fault- please help!

Post by welldonejack »

ok, so something rather strange hapened the other day...

went out and when i came back i could hear clicking coming from my camper (1985 Aircooled). a mechanic once told me this clicking was the fuel pump. i hear it every time i start the engine. which is fine except i hadnt been near the camper for at least an hour. the keys werent even in the ignition.
i put the keys in and started her up. on doing this i discovered that the indicator light on the dash was just permanantly on. the indicators had stopped working and also the hazards. also the clock had stopped working. i let her run for about 15 mins to let the engine warm up before i turned her off. on turning her off, i discovered i couldnt turn her off! i even took the keys out and her engine was still running.
as i went to try and find my haynes manuel ,my friend, very slowly, turned the key to the off position and this cut the engine off. phew!

now here is a list of things that had occured previously that may have led to these problems:

the night before i was camping with a friend of mine and we had the radio on all night. i havent done this before so not sure how well the battery might have been able to cope with it. however she started fine the next morning.
the next day when we were tidying her out, i knocked the windscreen wiper on. there are 3 settings to the wipers but my first one doesnt work so if i leave it on i dont notice. i had left it on and only noticed it when i got back to the camper and heard her fuel pump clicking away.
also, having checked the fuse box , which is exposed when the glove box is opened, my friend recalls having opened it to put something in, and it feeling awkward to close again.

having checked the fuse box, of the 12 possible positions for fuses to sit in, only the FIRST 8 actually have any fuses in them at all. needless to say, the one for the indicators doesnt have a fuse in it.

could it have been knocked out? this seems unlikely to me. i dont know. should i just replace the fuse and see what hapopens? i havent turned her on since and am a bit worried. i havent had her for long and am not very sure what im doing! this is all a learning curve.

ALSO, another thing which has had me stroking my chin since checking the fuse box is this:

when i was sold my camper i was told she was Aircooled. i didnt understand the significance of this at the time, not realising that from 1985 onwards they were made as watercooled (she has a reconned engine). so people on forums were like 'no, no, you've got a watercooled'. made me feel very silly to say the least! but then when i went to buy some parts off a fella, he took a look and was like 'no, no, this is an Aircooled!' so, i originally just had a haynes manuel for 1982-1990 T25's. having fairly concrete evidence she was Aircooled, i then purchased a haynes for 1979-1982 T25's.
when i was looknig thru my haynes for a diagram of the fuse box, i expected to find it in the later edition. but there are something like 23 fuse positions which just didnt marry up to what was in my camper. so i thought, on the off chance i'd take a look in the earlier edition of my haynes, and the diagram was spot on.

what in the world is going on?! what is my camper?! im most concerned because i was told that my previously watercooled vehicle has had an iarcooled engine fitted, but nothing else has been done to it so that the engine is actually getting enough air. but on inspection of the haynes, it looks to me as tho the air cooling properties of the engine, are built into the engine, so is there actually anything else that needs to be done?

gosh, sorry this is so long winded. any help would be GREATLY appreciated...thanks
