Hand brake cable

Post by pocolow »

The handbrake on my 1990 camper is on its last click , and there is virtually no more adjustment on the two separate cables going to the rear hubs. So it looks like the main cable may have stretched over the years and could do with replacement. Has anyone done this and any tips on the best source ie brickwerks/schofields...Cheers Mark

It's been obsolete from everywhere for quite a while Mark.

Brickwerks own cable is the only source, and there's some fettling to be done.

Well it seems like a sensible idea, if it obselete and I work for a company that can make cables.

We make cables for JCB, Rolls Royce etc etc.

Just give me something to work from and I will get it done.

The cable is available it's just the plastic guides that came on the cable that are unavailable

A reproduction of the original is available via Brickwerks but as mentioned previously it will need to be modified using components from the old cable (not ideal). VW class it as obselete.

Most motorfactors do not stock this item for this reason, GSF, Heritage, Eurocarparts even VW. I know if a like for like replacement was available it would be well received.

spoken to that department who are confident they can produce the whole cable including any sleeves and rubbers to VW's design.

Paul. The part that needs to be used from the old cable is the plastic guide. This is because the guide manufacturer no longer trades. Even a cable you had made up would still need the plastic guide from the old cable. Unless you know of somebody who could remake the guide at a realistic price

I am sure if it was economically possible Simon would have the guide piece on his cables given the amount of trouble and testing he went to to get the remanufactured cables bob on
