temp gauge help

Hi. Recently changed some pipes that should not have been on my van, someone had completely set the coolant system up wrong. Anyway it had been like this for the 2 years ive had it with no problems until i noticed how different my set up was. I managed to get the propper bottles and hoses as it had a vauxhall bottle and some unknown hoses. Whilst this set up was on my temp gauge never moved from the middle, but now after changing the set up the faster i go with more wind hitting my rad my temp gauge goes to quarter way up and when slowing or off the m way it goes to half way, if im strugling up hill it goes a little past half way. I just want to know if this is normal as i have never had a T25 or vw camper before. its a 1.6 d 84 panel van
