Then a khyam will be the easiest (and quickest) to pitch
a old fashioned 'frame' type awning will probably be the most sturdy in high winds
& some tunnel awnings are very big.

I used to have a Kyham motordome one and found it a pain in the bum. Yes its quick to erect but a faff lining the van up beside it if you drive offsite most days, plus it makes the inside of the van dark and I kept getting bits of it trapped in the sliding door. I sold it and got a Quercha pop up tent, one of the big ones you can stand up in. Even quicker to put up and take down, just as much space. And a lot cheaper, mine was £50 in the summer sale at Decathalon.

Re: drive away awning which one????
Weve just bought a Quechua Base seconds instead of a driveaway awning after hearing the views of VW and other campervan punters on another camping website.
It arrived last week and we pitched it in the dining room. Its fantastic and so easy to use, basically you throw it upo in the air and it pretty much sorts itself, well not far off anyway. Its the best bit of kit going. We'll use in the same way as a drive away awning. For example we dont really want to cook in the van as its nicer to do outside. So for 'proper' holidays we'll perhaps take a fold up camping kitchen unit with small cooker on top which we can move in and out of the Quechua. Maybe keep the cool box, clothing and chairs there too. For weekends away or for overnight stop offs en route somewhere the van on its own is fine and we wouldnt need the Quechua.
All of this is simply about comfort and convenience. The van can then be driven around for visits etc and everything is nicely set up in the Quechua when you get back, just like any tent or awning. It'll be a huge bonus to get to our destination and be completely sorted and set up in ten minutes flat, no hassle. We were going to get either the Khyam or the Just Kampers old skool awning. Im glad we didnt. The quechua is such a brilliant design and concept.
Decathlon are doing them for 50 quid which is about half price. We ordered ours over the phone from the Stockport branch.Theres a 'new' model out soon which im informed is the same tent in a different colour. So get yourself a bargain!

quite tempted by one of those base camp ones......I haven't used my khyam for over 12 months & because of this everything gets shoved under the van!

well it arrived today and like a big kid had to put it up in the lounge...bugger its big was an after thought. Think its ideal as a cheaper alternative to an awning and certainly has good room and ventilation options...can certainly recommend it.

mine came today too....I haven't seen it up cos it was too big to erect in the living room, something I only discovered after letting it out of the bag and letting it 'boing' I then spent ages trying to wrestle it back into a little disc! the quechua website does however have a pretty good (dis) instruction video and it is now safely tucked away until we get a dry spell and I can pop it out again

Re: drive away awning which one????
I cheated after failing to figure it out about how to get in the bag even with the video and waited till the good lady of the house rescued me, although as it took most the lounge up gave me an opportunity to sit in it....as only way to watch TV this evening! The sad thing is she got all done in a matter of seconds so is now nominated as in charge of setting up and packing it away on next trip!
Re: drive away awning which one????
I'm interested in these. Is it the base seconds xl you all have? Looks abit like a rigidome.

Excellent chaps!......I'll admit to being a bit smug when I managed to get it back into the bag first effort. I did whack the dog on the head though!
So it seems there'll be a few of these beasties around on sites and at events next year.

Re: drive away awning which one????
I think I'm working on a delay, only just spotted this thread.
Anyway we have Quechua 4 man pop up tent we use as an awning, very quick and easy to put up, takes a moment longer to put away, it nearly fits back into the bag. . This is perfect for 1 or 2 nights away, we use it a toilet tent and general storage. In Cornwall in June, we arrived to sideways rain, the tent went up ok and once pegged out coped very well with the wind, it just sort of folded flat and jumped back up again, I'm pleased we didn't have a table with things on it, they would not have been there very long.
We also use an outdoor revolution Nomad 3 for longer stays, this is a smidge smaller than the Navigator, It's perfect with our big chairs, fridge, kitchen unit and for general holiday storage. It's a bit tricky to put up in the wind, but once up it holds it own very well. We like it because it's lightweight, has windows, better shape compared to the tunnel awnings, it also has 3 doors amoungst it's many features.
And lastly, we used to have a JK traditional shaped awning, we found this a nightmare. Firstly the roof always filled with water, despite pulling it tight and pegging it our firmly. Secondly it was rubbish in strong winds, it always got damaged, bent legs etc. Many mornings we woke up to it leaning to one side, we always found ourselves repairing it whilst away, once binding sticks to it to act as splints.
We always seem to choose the windiest locations at the windiest times, every time we go away.
