Can anyone explain the Zig Unit?

Post by colouredFunk »

hey peps,

I have a leisure drive conversion with a cp400 zig unit. I understand the very basics on how the zig unit works, but has anyone got a diagram of how it works behind the scenes, or explain it to me. For example, does my van battery go straight to my leisure battery then on to the zig unit? presumably there is something that they both go into?

I have an auxiliary switch on the zig unit, what's this for? ideally I'd like to attach a flush mounting 12v socket to it. Can anyone give me some tips?

Thanks lots and lots for your help :D

the aux output is really for what ever you want provided it dosen't draw more current than the output is capable of suplying then you will not have a problem. the van battery and leisure bat are normaly in parrell for charging
(touring) and when switched to on site everything runs from the leisure bat
so providing what ever you plug into the socket doen't exceed the max amps available you won'nt have a problem, hope that made sense

Hello

I'm not sure about your specific unit but my van has the CF8 (a pretty common one i think). The instructions for fitting say you should not use a split charge relay as the ZIG controls the charging. The ZIG was fitted at time of conversion by Reimo but i have the manuals.

Its possible that my ZIG may be faulty BUT I have found that when the Onsite/ Touring switch is set to ON (ie to charge the leisure battery - normal operation) both batteries are conncted to each other ALL the time even when the van ignition is OFF. My L.Batt was draining the vehicle battery when left stood for a few days as the L.Batt is not keeping charge and needs replacement.

To fix/ get around this I have put a split charge relay inline between the ZIG and the L.Batt and for convenience I am using the Ign 12v+ to switch the relay over - strcitly speaking this feed should come from the Alternator but Ign live will do for me.

The above relates to the CF8.

Lee.

I have a leisurdrive too. On the CP400 there's 3 positions van-off-car. i think from the top of my head.

On mine when I flip the switch one way (down) that's my leisure battery and the light/water pump then work but what's the other up position for??

one of the problems is that a Zig unit is primaily for caravans so the vehicle battery is rarely left in parrallel with the leisure battery. When they are fitted to motor homes a split charge relay seems sensible.

Mines a Leisure Drive the same as this and the up position uses the car/van battery, I was told this was in case you drain the leisure battery you still have the back up of your primary battery.

hope this helps

Our Leisuredrive has this type of Zig unit and I also found that nothing worked when switched to the engine battery setting. When I unscrewed the panel to investigate I found that there was no wiring to that part of the switch. I have now run an appropriate (fused!) wire from the engine battery to the switch - just in case the camping battery ever runs down.
