help this is getting stupid

hiya, some help and advise would be great, went to collect the Aircooled van from the garage after a tune up and the van is stuck in 4th gear, gear lever wil wobble left and right but no back and fourth action,dont know how much more of this i can take , i just want to be able to use it, any ideas cheers gary

Im not a expert on the gear linkage ( not had any issues yet ! ) but have a quick look at this post, it may be a similar problem.

You need to get under there really. Could be because final joint has popped apart. Mine did that and its held together (even now) with cable ties and a plastic bag until I order in the bits.

thanks for that, gears have been sweet up until today, its at the garage as i couldnt tow to today, so they will have a quicl look, its so frustrating its got a years mot on it, new tax ,and now moneys running out, i may need to lay it up, would be such a waste to do that, could the selector forks have jammed, i wish i had a good Aircooled mechanic here in peterborough i get the feeling that most garages havnt a clue when it comes to these vansthanks again

i noticed that the gear lever has stuch a long way out of its normal position down towars ths drivers seat

you dont need an a/c mechanic, just someone that has been under one of these vans and knows what it should look like, they are so easy to sort, read up and you can do it yourself,look in members for help list and folk near to you

Just been reading your thread, and I noticed you are in Peterborough.

When I lived there in the 70's 80's there was a family VW enterprise in Fengate. The old chaps name was Uwe Aloe, ( I think), german and a true a/cooled fan. His son, probably in his 50's would perhaps have continued the thing.

Any way, good luck, as has been said here, they're not rocket science.

Shame it's not your handbrake cable giving trouble, at least you dont need it in the flat fens.

My latest van has been in the back of the big barn for 3 years now, and if I get all the firewood in this weekend, I might even start it up

thanks everyone, i dont know if this makes any difference but the gear lever is stuck in 4th gear , with no forward and aft movement , not just the gear itself, im wondering if a fork has jammed, if the garagte cant sort it i may remove the box and engine in one go is that easy i have had a unit out of a bay and beetle


on the plus side im saving a fortune on fuel

just pm'd aidan and also found his website, if the box is screwed i think it would be best to get it to him to look at than buy one off ebay

what you could do is disconnect linkage on selector shaft and see if you can move it manually, pair of molegrips would do.

will do, when i get it back from the garage i will try that, it was late so i didnt have time totow it back, i think that they are going to give it a quick look over but im not holding my breath, i needto do the push rod tube seals too , i know on the cu engine it can be done in situ, but im thinking if it doesnt free up with your methodi will try and drop the lotand give it all a once over, it doesnt look to hard to drop the lot in one go, would i be better to use jacks or hire a engine crane , thanks again for your help

ok a update, aidan couldnt help as he doesnt do Aircooled boxes, however i got a call from the garage this morning to say its all sorted , he said that the fork in the gearbox had jammed and that a bracket under the van was loose and this caused the gear to jam, ive given it a run and the gears are now sweet again, he said to just give him a tenner so at least it didnt turn out to be a massive fix. thanks to everyone for their help, you guys are great , im still learning about these vans but to know you experts are here is a great comfort, cheers again

yep it was a peterborough garage , but ii wont be taking the Aircooled there again, iv found a great one 45mins away cheers
