Best gearbox oil? (SPaddy you are excused!)

Post by KarlT »

I know its been talked about & there is alittle on WIKI from a few years back but what's presently thought to be the best Front & Rear box oils to go for.
Is it GL4 front-diff & GL5 Gearbox, or the other way round, I can't remember!

Do you mean GL4/GL5 (doesn't matter which) in both boxes?

the spec of the oil is GL4/5 which means as i understand it, it is suitable for bith gl4 spec and gl5. i confirmed this with adian before i bought the oil and he said it was all good to use. i used the same oil in both boxes.

GL4 and GL5 are different and you cant use one of them in both gearbox and front diff as it corrodes bronze synchromesh rings or something. Its GL4 for the box and GL5/GL4 for the front diff. Dont know about dual spec stuff though but if Aidan say its ok then it is. We can sue him later

This gl/4 gl/5 thing is a myth that does not apply to synthetic modern oils.

some GL5 only oils have the nasty addative that will corrode the "yellow metal" parts.. but this usually happens above 100 deg C... (and surprisingly these boxes do see that temperature on a run)

Most dual rated oils ie GL4/5 are ok.. but its worth getting confimation from the manufacturer.. I know the Millers and Fuchs ones are ok (as Aidan checked up on these) and I would assume Comma SX 75/90 is too as its been in my caravelle for the last 10 years and 200k km.... (2 changes )
