Underseal?
It looks like plastic padding and it smells like plastic padding!
But is it really what in my wheel arches? I noticed its on some other Syncros, but what is it and can I get any more?
Problem is with it is that it does a great job, so much so that its now rusting from the inside out
Thanks all

Re: Underseal?
Gravitex make a good underseal. Personal I like the bitumen and waxoyl stuff, at least it has a corrosion inhibitor in it.

Re: Underseal?
If you mean the brown coating put all over the underside in the factory, then according to Mike G, VW used Valvoline Tectyl.

Re: Underseal?
i have wanted to know that for years.
i just looked it up on the internet and i cant find anyone selling tectyl 190 online.
i phoned our local auto parts supplier and they deal with valvoline but dont have that product listed. he did some research and phoned me back saying that they could get a box of 12x 1l vacuum cans ( like schutz cans for a compressor ) and they would work out at £11/can including the vat.
i think i could use a couple of cans. i will get them if anyone else is interested in sharing the load.
let me know.

Re: Underseal?
That 190 sounds more like the grey stone-chip coating VW put into the wheel arches before the shells were painted. I was referring to the waxy brown stuff sprayed over the whole underside after final assembly. Tectyl 120 sounds close:
Description
TECTYL 120 is a filled, solvent cutback, wax/asphaltic base, thixotropic, corrosion preventive
compound.
TECTYL 120 is suitable for the complete undercoating of undersides of autos, trucks, buses,
trailers, camp trailers, heavy construction equipment and cargo containers.
TECTYL 120 dries to a firm, bronze colored, resilient, tough and abrasion resistant film.
There are data sheets here:
http://www.valvolineeurope.com/english/ ... /pi_sheets
In the past I've topped up the original underseal with Dinitrol 4195, which is black, but otherwise is similar. I'd be keen to get some of the proper stuff...

Re: Underseal?
Thanks guys. What I have on mine is more like plastic padding and is a thick layer in all the wheel arches.

Re: Underseal?
when you say plastic padding, what exactly do you mean? Can you describe it a bit more?

Re: Underseal?
if you look you'll see the wheel arches are spray coated with a grey plastic type material, where the arches meet the body at the back it can be 1/2" thick, especially on the Swedish vehicles. It was an option to have the whole of the vehicle so undersealed, MG's syncro was so supplied as it was destined for a life in a limestone quarry. It's great until it delaminates and water gets in behind then it acts as a trap and rusts behind it
I can probably find out from VW what they used to do it

Re: Underseal?
I'd be interested in a can of the real stuff as I've just done some repairs and coated it in the schulz stuff, which is ok but next to the vw stuff it really stands out as it's nowhere near as thick (as Aidan says).
