Petrol in vw kameo fresh water tank.

Post by mickp79 »

Hello people, i recently bought a kameo g reg which my mate had put petrol into the large water tank . The main problem is, after removing from the van, i have noticed that the pump has disintegrated and the plastic casing of the pump has stuck to the inside . Any ideas on how i can possibly clean this out, as the lid in the centre doesn't give you much space to clean out. Obviously, the worse case scenario is i may need a new tank! where the heck can i get hold of one if any? I've looked around on net and cannot find any . Any help would be appreciated. cheers.

Hiya, welcome to the forum.

If the drinking water tank has had petrol in it I'll wager it's scrap, the taint just doesn't come out of the plastic.

Sorry, Ian.

Ive got a water tank in the shed but I dont know if its what youve got. It used to sit under the back seats and is about three quarters of the van wide. and triangle shaped so that it sat against the wheel arch. If you want it let me know, got to clear out its getting ridiculous in there!

If its scrap, take the jig saw to it and cut it up to get out... unless you want to take out the interior of course...

That sounds like the one Access hole in the top centre? Depth gauge and overflow to the right? This is the best picture of mine (although it's in a Komet, not a Kameo).....

Although I did remove my furniture last year I didn't remove the tank (no need) but wouldn't it come out if you just remove the small amount of woodwork next to the sliding door rather than at the cupboards end?

Next step would be to PM jojorose and open negotiations....

I'm glad somebody else has got one for you as I only recently chucked mine out after it had been taking up space in my garage for years, I didn't think anyone would ever want it. I think they're too massive for normal camping requirements, when are you ever going to need to carry that much water around?, plus I could never fully empty it and clean it out. I've replaced mine with an ordinary plastic water drum which fits under the sink and I use the space under the seats for storing other stuff.

I use mine all year round and provided it's not left unused for months on end there's not much cleaning required. You can empty it (via the tap) but you need to get the last little bit up with a towel shoved through the top. I know 55 ltrs of water sounds a lot (and it would be if you only drank it) but if you wild camp away from facilities it only takes a few rounds of washing up after cooking to put a serious dent in it.

We loved Swiss water so much.. that we filled our tank full up so as not to drink the french stuff on the return home.
filling your tank with large quantities of a good known source of drinking water is a good idea don't you think?

I admit in England it is readily available but, you never know ...
