diesel pump

Post by JC »

The engine on my 1.6TD occasionally continues to rev at around 1500 revs with the van in neutral and no throttle. If I put it in gear and gently let out the clutch and then return to neutral the revs drop to normal tick over and remain there with no problem. I have checked the cable and throttle lever on the pump and it returns to where it should be. I have been advised that this problem may require a new/rebuilt pump. Can anyone confirm that his is correct or do they have any suggestions that may be causing this problem. I can live with this at the moment but I don't want to create long term problems.
Many thanks for any advice

I'd say there's a good chance that it's just the brass bushing that the shaft turns in. If you want to save some money, and you can buy the bushing from a shop, it can be replaced fairly easily. The worse part is keeping the return springs in the right orientation while re-assembling. While you are at it , you can also do the governor modification to get some extra power. You can find out how at http://www.vwdiesel.net/, which unfortunately is down at the moment due to a virus/spam attack.

Unfortunately the site has been attacked by a virus and is down for now, but should be up and running soon. You will be able to find out to get more power easily by reading the tips there. But in the mean time, the easy way is to make sure your intake and filter are clean. If you get black smoke at half or full throttle, then the fuel screw is at the right spot. If no then you can afford to turn it in, 1/4 turn at a time. You will then also have to turn down the idle. Either way, it won't hurt turn out the max throttle stop a couple of turns, and the making sure the throttle cable can open it to mate with the adjustment, but that won't anything unless you can adjust the wastegate to increase boost. On 1.6 diesels the blow-off valve [on the end of the intake ] can be plugged or fixed so it does not function anymore. As time wears out our engines, the blow off valve gets weak and opens too soon , and not letting the engine accept all the boost the turbo is producing. Remember also that diesel don't need exhaust back pressure like a gas engine does, so when it's time to fit a new partial or complete exhaust, get as large diameter pipes that are the same as the exhaust manifold port and follow all the way to the tailpipe. The more air that you can get in and out, the more power potential there is. For basically zero money , those engines can be made to produce another 15-20 % more usable power.
