Fuel tank splashback

Hello,

I've had a look on the wiki, but am struggling to understand how the breather pipes and expansion tanks work exactly. Whenever I fill up, if I don't stop early, there is a gurgling followed by a load of diesel flying out of the filler. I've replaced the perished pipes to the expansion tank, and theexpansion tank breather pipes seems to be ok, but I wondered if they were blocked, or whether something is wrong with the breather pipe on the filling neck. I'd be really grateful if someone could explain why this happens, as I don't really understand the pressure differentials that are going on.

I get this if I fill from certain places.
I think the flow rate is to high and you get a wave flowing back.
I stand back and try and stop fueling before it happens (a tuned ear will tell you when).

thanks for the reassurance - standing back is a good piece of advice... thankfully I have no nice shoes or trousers...
