high top/ high winds!

Post by tomsneade »

Hi people, Ive only had my 1985 ddiesel high top for a few months and was greatly supprised just how difficult she was to handle when the wind gets up... Is that a common problem with all high tops or is it just me not being used to the way she drives... my van does seem to sit rather high off the ground!

Front spoiler, powerflex suspension bushes and poweflex steering column bushes all help. I don't get any wandering feelings now unless it's a gale force wind when really you should slow down anyway

hightop is no worse than a pop top.
its more to do with the tyres, correct pressures and front spoiler, and as said above the poly bushes will help....

lowering makes no difference to the amount of wind you are pushing, but will affect how the spoiler works....

My Hi top is still on standard height suspension ( probably original ! ) standard 14 inch 185 width steel wheels but does have a front air splitter/spoiler, any way she does wander around a bit in the wind..... I tend not to fight it but relax my grip a little and go with it I found that since I put the correct pressure in the tyres it is quite a bit worse.... but then with only 25 psi all round I am surprised that she rolled along at all

I have fitted coil spring assisters to front and rear. This has stiffened the suspension improving road holding and cross wind stability to the point she is almost like a normal vehicle.

They were this make.

Very pleased with the result. Cant remember the exact size.

Problem I have with windy conditions is how it screws up my MPG .. unless it's pushing me along. It can be a bit unnerving when you get hit by sudden crosswinds so I just drive slower (not that I have much choice about that!)..
