How much "give" in the wheel bearing housing?

Post by Ollie »

I recently had a garage change the wheel bearings on both sides at the back of my 1990 T25. With the van jacked up, one wheel has a a lot of movment("give") when I rock it sideways and also from top to bottom. The mechanic at the garage took it all apart again, and says the wheel bearing housing is worn to the extent that allows this kind of "give" in the wheel even with new bearings installed.

How much movment could be allowed, or should there be non at all?

I wanted to take one of the wheel bearing housing of my spare parts van, but found that it has a bit of movment from side to side (9-3 O'clock)

Sadly these housings do wear which is why a new bearing doesn't always solve a lot of play. At the end of the day, if MOT man doesn't approve, you have to start going down the housing route to bring it within tolerance. They tend to oval slightly.
