Driving along in my 1.9 petrol that has been running ace, progressively lost power, backfiring too and stopped, wouldn't restart no way.
Waited 40 mins for the AA, guy turned up and it started up again !!!! ( he did nothing he said). Carried on driving and although running was definitely lacking power and on the overrun ?, ie when you take your foot off the gas still backfiring lots and wouldn't get much past 60 and with lots of gear changing to get there, oh and when you came to a stop it cuts out ?.
Im moving house in a week and have to get this sorted but have no idea what it may be , HEEEEELPPPPP !!!

Disaster ?
I have no idea where it came from, or what it is, but it's looking right at me.

Re: Disaster ?
Backfiring and loss of power is usually related to lack of fuel espicially if it restarts after a while. Check the fuel filter first.
There could be a small filter just inside the fuel intake on the carb itself, known to block as well.
Check ignition timing as well, may have changed if distributor was allowed to slip at any time if the clamp wasn't done up tight enough.
I would say it could be an air leak on the inlet manifold but if leaving it for a while allowed it to start again then it's unlikely.

Re: Disaster ?
was it raining?? water in fuel.. getting in via a perished filler neck rubber (or rusty filler tube if a steel one) or the breather tank connections..
As said.. check fuel filter (located near fuel tank, should be a "large" type) then needs top popping off carb to clear out any water/dirt in there... etc

Hello,
Do you have a condensor on your distributor
If so when did you last change it.

Re: Disaster ?
Cheers for all the replies...I found the problem...the HT lead had become loose and the alternator pully had taken big chunks out of it, why didnt the AA man spot it !!!!!!, I was in the front trying to start it so never looked under the engine lid !!!
