Priming mechanical choke

Post by gardnerw »

Hello to all,

MIght be setting myself up for some mild p133 taking but.....

Can anyone tell me the correct way to prime the autochoke when starting?

It's my understanding (correct me if i'm wrong) that the autochoke on my van is entirely mechanical with no priming device or idle valve (?) and that if i depress the throttle prior to starting this resets it to the first position which as it warms (or i blip the throttle) the mechanism gets hotter and closes the choke (3 positions ?). Whatever its nature it seemed to be working OK until recently, i now need to apply and hold pressure to the throttle for a few mins until the engine has warmed else it cuts out. Once warm it runs a treat.

Any thoughts, advice, corrections greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Much depends on the carburretor setup you have but if it is mechanical then the normal cold start routine is just one full depression of the throttle and release to set the stept fast idle (bi-metalic snail spring)
If you are having to hold up the idle there does sound like an issue that needs addressing.

Thanks for your reply Red,

Yes i believe it is "snail spring"

so.

full depression of throttle > release > turn key or should the throttle be depressed slightly when turning key?

Many Thanks

Just to add to the confusion, I had the same symptoms you describe.
I read on here to try depressing throttle twice slowly, then foot off the accelerator and turn the key.
works for me-so far. Worth a try.

Everyone eventually susses out the best way to start there own vehicle but from a purely technical perspective....pressing the accelerator more than once means that the accellerator pump has squirted extra fuel directly into the venturi for each time you press the pedal. The accelerator pump dellivers more if the pedal is pressed quickly of course but the point is you run the risk of flooding the engine by being over zelous.
Starting should be done without throttle but as revs increase a gentle press to reset the staged fast idle is required.
Where possible, you should always allow a short warm up before driving, this ensures good lubricant circulation and time for pistons to expand etc.
Most wear occurs in the first few minutes of warm up so thrashing from the off is bad for the engine.
I always allow my engine a couple of minutes before the off.
