Perplexed

Post by Gandalf »

While in France I noticed that the rear windscreen was slowly getting a film ow what looks like and feels like a very light oil. This was followed a couple of days later with the clutch servo thingy breaking got it all replaced at a French garage (Google Translator is great  ). So I'm thinking (and did ask) was the oil on the rear windscreen in fact clutch fluid - response was a resounding Oui (didn't ned translator for that)! Excellent thinks me only to get the same oily like deposits. As I've said it doesn't look or feel like engine oil so anyone got any ideas as to where or what could be leaking? As the servo thingy has been replaced.

As always any help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

if it's oil and not engine oil then it must be gear oil, brake and clutch fluid washes off with water though it eats the paint too
unless you have a can of oil on board somewhere that's fallen over and leaking out somewhere

Cheers Aidan (was hoping you were on here TBH) - I'm also thinking Gbox oil as thats generally a lighter oil if I'm right in thinking? I've got a late JX 1.6TD with 5 speed box (apparently with an extended 5th gear - whatever that means?) - where will I find both the drain plug and the fill for the Gbox as I'd like to change the oil anyway.

drain plug is on bottom of bellhousing just in front of engine, filler is 2/3 way along the box half way up on the offside hidden by the selector rod

Silly question I know, have you got a rear wiper as even if you clean the rear screen the deposits remain on the wiper.

sounds like you need new rear wiper relay then if it doesn't go off when you push the stalk forward again

do you have a metal cover under your engine, when i have had oil leeks the cover collects oil and then when i have fixed the leek but not washed the plate off, i have had oil spraying up the back when im driving as it blows off the cover.

Guessed as much but to be honest the rear wiper isn't much kop anyway. What with that and the overhead locker the view through the rear windscreen isn't upto much - just glad I've got synchro mirror arms with larger mirrors.

That could be it - I'll let it go for the next couple of outings (nothing to far) to see if it resolves itself.
